The Naica Mine

naica mine

The Naica Mine is located in Chihuahua, Mexico. It is used to mine zinc from 200 million- year-old limestone. A chamber found in 1910 was named Cave of the Swords because of swordlike selenite crystals in the chamber that were 6.5 feet (2 m) long. Selenite is a relatively rare form of gypsum. In 2000, another chamber was discovered in the mine that has selenite crystals that are 39 feet (12 m) long and up to 6.5 feet (2 m) in diameter. These selenite crystals were formed from hot, mineral- laden water rising up from deep underground. The temperature in the chamber is 150°F (65°C).
